Making Music, Making Friends
Social Skills Help for Young Children
Some children have more difficulty making friends than others. "Making Music, Making Friends" is a new 10-week curriculum of musical experiences designed to help young children learn the necessary social skills. Therapists at Music Therapy Services are now offering these groups for 4 different age levels, from preschool through 6th grade, beginning January 9, 2009. Each group will consist of four to six children with one therapist.
During the 10 weeks, children will sing, play instruments, listen and move to music while they are also learning how to be good friends. Specific skills for each group will be age appropriate.
Preschoolers may learn how to take turns and share the instruments. Kindergarten and first-graders may learn how to express their anger and frustration without tears and how to help a friend. Second and third graders may learn how to talk with their friends and solve conflicts. Fourth through sixth graders may learn how to be more aware of other's feelings and how to get along in a group of friends.
Each group will have musical experiences chosen specifically for them by the music therapist leading the group.
No previous musical experience is required. Special needs and typical children are welcome. The cost of the 10 week session is $250 and pre-registration is required.
