Yumiko Sato
Yumiko Sato (MA, MT-BC) is a board certified music therapist, specializing in hospice and palliative care music therapy. Since she began her work at Music Therapy Services in 2003, she has provided music therapy to patients and families at Hospice of Cincinnati. Initially a part-time contract, her work at HOC has grown into a full-time position where she sees patients in the four in-patient units, long-term care, home-care while overseeing several dedicated music volunteers.
Yumi has published articles on music therapy in Voices, A World Forum for Music Therapy, and her research, “Musical Life Review in Hospice” is scheduled for upcoming publication in Music Therapy Perspectives. In addition to published research, Yumi is a frequent presenter at regional and national conferences. Locally she has given workshops on a variety of topics ranging from drumming for wellness to music and spirituality.
Yumi received her Bachelor of Arts in Music from Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia and her equivalency in music therapy and a Master of Arts in Music from Radford University in Virginia. She completed a six month internship in music therapy at Mountain Area Hospice (CarePartners Hospice) in North Carolina before coming to Cincinnati.
Originally from Tokyo, Yumi is particularly interested in multicultural issues in hospice music therapy. In her work she uses the harp, guitar, Native American flute, piano, and her voice.
